A. urinae has been isolated from urine collected from both males and females with a wide range of clinical conditions, including urinary tract infection (UTI), urgency … Background: Aerococcus urinae is a gram-positive, alpha-hemolytic coccus bacterium primarily implicated in less than 1 % of all symptomatic urinary tract infections. Risk factors for disease include male gender, advanced age, and comorbid genitourinary tract pathology. To evaluate procedures for the identification of Aerococcus urinae, we examined 24 alpha-hemolytic non-enterococcal bacterial isolates from 4373 urine samples. Published procedures were compared with 16s rRNA sequencing and biochemical profiling (BBL-Crystal-GP). 16s rRNA sequencing and BBL-Crystal-GP identified the same 13 isolates as A. urinae. Aerococcus spp. A. christensenii; A. sanguinicola; A. urinae; A. urinaehominis; A. viridans; Gram Stain.

A. urinaeand A. sanguinicola were isolated in approximately 1 % of all urine samples in Skåne. The patients were of old age and gender was almost equally distributed between men and women. Almost 80 % of patients with aerococcal bacteruria had symptoms of a urinary tract infection. Aerococcus urinae is often misclassified in routine diagnostic laboratories. A. urinae shares features with staphylococci, streptococci and enterococci as the bacterium grows in clusters, displays a-haemolysis when grown on blood agar, and is resistant to sulphonamide.

Aerococcus genus was divided into Aerococcus viridans and A. urinae with the use of 16sRNA sequencing [3].

To verify the relevance and biofilm FICHE TECHNIQUE Aerococcus urinae CLASSIFICATION - NOMENCLATURE Aerococcus urinae appartient au genre Aerococcus qui comprend à l'heure actuelle 8 espèces : 5 espèces isolées chez l'homme: Aerococcus viridans, espèce type, décrit en 1953, A.urinae (1992), A. Aerococcus urinae. This organism is closely related to Aerococcus viridans (which is usually PYR positive and LAP negative). In 1992, it was given its own unique classification. Aerococci occur naturally in dust, air, vegetation, and hospital environments.

Aerococcus-like organisms was clearly shown in a series of pio-neering works from Christensen and colleagues [6,10,19] leading to the definition of the new species A. urinae in 1992 [20], which encompasses most Aerococcus-like organisms [21]. In 2001 the clinically relevant species Aerococcus sanguicola [22],
